some kind of truth - curators statement
It isn’t often one has the chance to sit down with other artists and examine - at this moment in my life – what is my Truth?
A rewarding aspect of co-curating and participating in this show is, that although we are all women, we are remarkably diverse. Our academic studies include Psychology, Criminology, Architecture, of course, studio arts. Our professional careers include social work, curator, and docent. We are also at different stages of life; graduate studies, mid-career arts professionals and established artists. Collectively, I found, we formed an intriguing picture.
Our interests are as complex as our lives have been; making order from chaos, the female and nature, visions, dreams, subconscious, intuition, survival, motherhood, and the nature of being a woman.
We met over the last year to prepare for the show and had fascinating conversations, some of us were very open, some guarded – even our definition of truth was dramatically different. This process helped all of us define how our work would merge to describe the lives of six women - at this moment in time.
I love the rich variety of media in the show, Carien’s "Bound by the Truth" is an especially compelling installation. It has an inevitability about it that speaks the truth persuasively.
